Anthropic Acquires SDK Specialist Stainless

The Point: Anthropic acquires Stainless to structurally improve the integration of Claude agents with external APIs and data sources.

Anthropic has acquired Stainless, founded in 2022, which has generated all official Anthropic SDKs since its inception. The acquisition is intended to give Claude agents better access to external data sources and systems.

Stainless specializes in the automated generation of Software Development Kits (SDKs), Command-Line Interfaces (CLIs), and MCP servers. The company converts API specifications into SDKs for TypeScript, Python, Go, Java, and other programming languages. Hundreds of companies use Stainless’s platform to create such tools—the libraries and connectors that enable developers and AI agents to utilize APIs.

For practitioners, this means more structured integration of SDK generation and agent connectivity: Anthropic had developed the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to enable agents to connect to external systems. With the acquisition of Stainless, this capability is being integrated directly into the Claude platform, unifying the developer experience and making it easier for agents to access data sources and APIs.

Katelyn Lesse, Head of Platform Engineering at Anthropic, emphasizes: “Agents are only as useful as the systems they can connect to.” Founder and CEO Alex Rattray adds that Stainless deliberately chose to work with Anthropic because that is where the platform emerged on which SDKs matter most.
