Anthropic Reveals Claude Usage Patterns: Agentic Tasks Shape New Work Mechanics

Bottom line: Claude is increasingly being deployed for agentic tasks rather than pure conversations, revealing new data evaluation methods and more differentiated usage patterns.

Anthropic has updated its Economic Index for June 2026 and documented how Claude usage has shifted from pure chat scenarios to long-running, autonomous tasks. Data collection has been increased to hourly granularity to map these new work patterns.

Anthropic has revised the methodology of its Economic Index to reflect Claude’s changing deployment scenarios. While the platform was primarily used for user-assistant conversations a year ago, long-running agentic tasks via Claude Code and Cowork now dominate usage profiles. Chat transcripts no longer fully capture these new work patterns.

The technological adjustments to data collection are substantial: instead of seven-day sampling, hourly sampling now occurs with classified output labeling per conversation. Results are aggregated granularly by chat, cowork, and first-party API usage at the monthly level. In parallel, an Economic Index Survey launched in April 2026 to measure perception of AI effects on work and career prospects.

Cadence analyses show that Claude usage mirrors clear work cycle patterns: the share of private conversations increases on weekdays from approximately 35 percent to nearly 50 percent on weekends. Within individual days, further patterns emerge – requests for sleep advice concentrate around 3 a.m., recipes are frequently requested around 6 p.m. Event-driven peaks occur with tax-related queries before US filing deadlines.

Output types differ by product channel: Chat and Cowork generate more explanatory text than Claude Code. More complex tasks such as website development require higher compute shares – evidence of increasing value creation with rising token consumption. Users with higher automation rates expect stronger AI task takeover, but simultaneously express more positive expectations for salary, job security, and work fulfillment.
