Benelux Countries Lead Germany in AI Adoption in Business

Bottom line: 26 percent of German companies use AI technologies, while Benelux countries are significantly ahead with better data skills and higher software maturity.

The analytics platform Leadfeeder has assessed European countries on their AI maturity — the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg lead, while Germany and Austria lag considerably behind.

Leadfeeder examined AI adoption across 32 European countries using 13 Eurostat indicators. The assessment covered AI use in enterprises, cloud adoption, data analytics, enterprise software deployment, digital population skills and ICT employment.

The Benelux region completely dominates the European top tier: the Netherlands ranks fifth — supported by the highest share of people with above-average digital skills in Europe. Belgium ranks seventh and achieves fourth place in the AI and data usage sub-index. Luxembourg completes the top 10 at tenth place.

Germany drops to 16th place overall. According to Eurostat, currently 26 percent of German companies use AI technologies — significantly behind countries such as Denmark and Finland. Austria follows immediately at 17th place. The study identifies higher data competence, more intensive use of enterprise software and an overall higher level of digital skills in the population as structural reasons for Benelux’s lead.
