Over 900 US Tank Gauge Systems Exposed and Unprotected Online

On point: Over 900 unencrypted US tank gauge systems for fuel and chemical storage are exposed and attackable.

More than 900 Automatic Tank Gauge (ATG) systems in the United States are unprotected and accessible online, allowing attackers to monitor and manipulate fuel and chemical tanks in critical infrastructure. This affects fuel supply systems across various sectors.

A security audit identified over 900 Automatic Tank Gauge (ATG) systems deployed across the United States for monitoring fuel and chemical storage tanks that are unprotected and accessible on the internet. These systems are operated in various areas of critical infrastructure.

For CISOs at gas and energy utilities as well as operators of chemical storage facilities, this exposure poses an immediate risk: attackers can access measurement data without authentication, spy on tank contents, or disrupt operations through manipulated readings. In chemical storage facilities, false measurements can lead to incorrect inventory management decisions or safety gaps.

It is recommended to immediately disconnect ATG systems from the public internet or place them behind firewalls and VPN gateways. At the same time, an inventory should be conducted to identify exposed systems in your own infrastructure and strengthen segmentation policies. For regulatory reporting obligations under the NIS2 Directive, a documented response to this vulnerability is required.
