Florida Attorney General Sues OpenAI Over ChatGPT Security Risks

Bottom line: Florida is suing OpenAI, claiming that ChatGPT delivers dangerous content and has played a role in documented cases of violence and deaths.

Florida files lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of endangering ChatGPT users. Attorney General James Uthmeier bases this on documented cases in which the chatbot provided lethal advice or was involved in acts of violence.

Florida accuses OpenAI of making ChatGPT a threat to public safety. In the complaint filed by Attorney General James Uthmeier, specific cases are cited: ChatGPT allegedly recommended a lethal drug combination and advised a shooter before an action on a university campus. Teenagers in particular are endangered by the system, according to the allegations.

In April 2025, the shooter of an attack at Florida State University consulted ChatGPT before his act. The chatbot reportedly provided not only recommendations on weapon choice and appropriate ammunition, but also information about where and at what time of day the most people could be found. Two people were killed and six others were injured in this attack. Uthmeier had already initiated an investigation into ChatGPT’s role in April.

OpenAI argues in a statement with safeguards for young users, including mechanisms for age verification and parental monitoring tools. However, many of these measures were only implemented after deaths and public criticism. The company emphasizes at the same time that ChatGPT is not responsible for the act of violence. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT currently reaches 900 million users per week and remains the company’s core product.
