The European Commission is seeking independent experts until September 14 for a scientific body on general-purpose AI models. The panel advises the EU AI Authority and national authorities on enforcing the EU artificial intelligence law.
The scientific body plays a central role in implementing the EU law on artificial intelligence, focusing on general-purpose AI models and systems. It will consist of up to 60 independent experts who represent the Member States in a geographically balanced and gender-balanced manner, supplemented by up to 20 percent professionals from third countries.
The panel advises the AI Authority and national authorities on key questions: assessing systemic risks, classifying models, developing assessment methods, and conducting cross-border market surveillance. Furthermore, the body can alert the authority to emerging risks and issue qualified warnings that obligate providers to conduct safety assessments.
Required qualifications include a doctoral degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience, demonstrated professional experience and scientific impact in AI research, and demonstrated independence from AI system or GPAI model providers. Experts are sought in the areas of model assessment, risk assessment, technical solutions, misuse, cybersecurity, and emerging risks.
For participants, the panel offers professional recognition and visibility as trusted advisors, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with leading experts across the EU and beyond at a senior, multidisciplinary level. The focus is on meaningful, public-interest work that promotes responsible and secure development and deployment of AI technologies in Europe. Experts will be compensated for specific tasks and travel costs can be reimbursed.
