Anthropic Expands Dialogue on AI Development with Wisdom Traditions

The Bottom Line: Anthropic is engaging in dialogue with religions and philosophy: the AI company is collaborating with experts from over 15 religious and cultural traditions to improve the development of ethical AI systems and equip Claude with diverse value perspectives.

Anthropic is conducting systematic conversations with representatives from more than 15 religious and cultural traditions. The company wants to learn from philosophers, clergy, and ethicists in order to incorporate diverse perspectives in the development of safe and beneficial AI systems such as Claude.

The AI company Anthropic is launching a comprehensive dialogue with experts from diverse worldview traditions. The goal is to enrich the technical development of safe AI systems through philosophical, religious, and cultural insights. Over recent months, the company has organized discussion rounds with scholars, clergy, philosophers, and ethicists to collectively deliberate on what good AI should look like.

Specifically, Anthropic is working on the so-called “moral shaping” of its AI systems. This encompasses the question of what values and behaviors Claude, Anthropic’s flagship AI model, should embody. Claude’s Constitution, a detailed values document, is being continuously developed through these dialogues. Anthropic explicitly emphasizes that Claude should not reflect a single worldview, but should integrate religious, secular, and political perspectives with equal rigor.

The conversations focus on fundamental questions about the character development of AI systems: What does it mean for an AI to be ethically good? What qualities and behaviors should such systems display? How can their resilience be strengthened so that they do not fall into opportunistic or ingratiating behavior under pressure?
