In short: Google deploys RCS-based end-to-end verification against fake calls that detects spoofing and AI voice cloning through real-time device communication.
Google is launching a global rollout of a new Android security feature that detects AI-powered impersonation calls through encrypted device verification in real time. The feature uses RCS-based digital handshakes between devices to expose caller ID spoofing and voice cloning.
Google is introducing “Fake Call Detection” globally for Android 12 and newer. The feature combats a widespread fraud scheme in which criminals combine caller ID spoofing with AI-generated voice clones to disguise callers as trusted contacts in order to extort money or sensitive data.
Technically, the feature works in the background through encrypted data matching between devices: when a real contact calls, their smartphone sends a silent confirmation signal over the RCS standard (Rich Communication Services) to the recipient’s device. If this signal is missing – for example, because a fraudster is imitating the number – the system automatically triggers a verification request to the actual device of the saved contact. If that device confirms that no call is currently taking place, the screen displays a warning and advises hanging up.
Three Google apps are required as default applications for use: Phone by Google, Contacts and Google Messages (with RCS enabled). Pixel and Motorola devices already have these pre-installed; Samsung has switched newer models to Google Messages. Other manufacturers’ users must manually install the apps from the Google Play Store. The feature is enabled by default but can be disabled in settings.
The rollout initially launches exclusively on Google Pixel, then gradually expands to compatible devices from other manufacturers. This is a device-level solution that does not require new infrastructure standards in mobile networks themselves and is therefore available faster than carrier-side measures.
