Modular Mini-Computer: Flipper One Becomes Universal Linux Cyberdeck

The Flipper One is not meant to be merely a successor to the successful gadget, but rather a versatile mobile companion. The community is to help develop it.. The Flipper Zero is Tamagotchi and hacker tool in one: The gadget masters various (short-range) radio protocols, can be expanded with additional modules via GPIO pins and has since also become a gaming console [1]. This not only inspired imitators [2], but also sparked calls for a successor.. The newly presented Flipper One bears all the hallmarks of a continuation: name plus increased version number, similar appearance and control concept. Yet it will, as the manufacturer has now announced, be a completely different device. Above all, the “One” will be one thing: open – for expansions, collaboration, further development. Flipper Devices CEO Pavel Zhovner is now asking the global developer community for help with his goals: the most open and best-documented ARM computer in the world should become the Flipper One, all components should work without binary drivers, and it should implement an innovative control concept. The expandability and significantly more powerful hardware compared to Flipper Zero, but also many Raspberry Pi mini-computers, makes the Flipper One in its creator’s eyes a universal tool for network enthusiasts, such as a travel router or for troubleshooting in corporate networks. But the Flipper One is also meant to serve well as an emergency desktop computer or travel media center.. And indeed, the published specifications for the Flipper One seem appealing to network tinkerers, Linux enthusiasts and hackers. In addition to the 8-core SoC RK3576 with GPU and NPU, a dual-core RP2350 microcontroller also operates on the device. Both share 8GB of RAM. Two Ethernet ports, USB-C, a full-size HDMI connector and of course WLAN are planned. Via an M.2 expansion connector (Key-B), the Flipper can be expanded with expansion cards of type 2242, 3042 and 3052 up to height D3.. Those who need greater radio range have access to four SMA connectors on the back of the housing and can, for example, connect antenna connectors from an M.2 WLAN adapter to them. Satellite modems could also be connected this way – Flipper One also supports the satellite-based NTN protocol.. Linux – as open as possible. The “Flipper OS” operating system is also intended to herald a departure from the status quo for ARM-based mini-computers. The state of Linux on ARM is “depressing” and dominated by proprietary binary drivers, Zhovner laments. Together with the Collabora team, Flipper developers have now brought support for the RK3576 SoC into the Linux kernel in order to reduce such dependencies. Goal: a fully open platform that supports any Linux. And Zhovner has also set ambitious goals in the other direction. The control concepts and graphical interface that he envisions for his Flipper One should also work on other mini-computers, ideally with just a single “apt install” call.. A lot of work, and the team is “not 100 percent sure how the architecture will look,” according to Zhovner. That’s why the project is asking for active collaboration and has set up a developer portal online for this purpose. Those who want to help will find there instructions on how they can get involved in one of six sub-projects: hardware, mechanics, Linux, UI, firmware, documentation and testing.. One arrives – when?. However, the announcement leaves some information unanswered: when the device will be released and what it will cost. The release date can only be speculated on, though there has apparently been a working prototype since February of this year. The price, however, is likely to appeal more to affluent gadget enthusiasts. Zhovner had hinted months ago that the RAM crisis and general price increases in hardware components are threatening the project’s viability and will drive the price upward.
