Key points: Google DeepMind announces strategic partnership with South Korea: A new AI Campus in Seoul will connect leading research institutions with Google’s AI experts to accelerate breakthroughs in life sciences, climate research and other areas.
Ten years after the legendary AlphaGo showdown in Seoul, Google DeepMind and South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) announce a groundbreaking partnership. The collaboration aims to establish artificial intelligence as a driver of economic growth and accelerate breakthroughs in life sciences, meteorology and climate research.
As part of the “National Partnerships for AI” initiative, Google DeepMind will collaborate with South Korean universities and research institutions to advance the country’s national AI strategy. South Korea ranks first globally in AI innovation density and has the fastest AI adoption rate among the 30 largest economies.
A new AI Campus will open in Google’s Seoul offices and serve as a collaboration hub where Korean universities and research institutions work alongside Google’s leading AI specialists. The focus is on established institutions such as Seoul National University (SNU), the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and three AI Bio-Innovation Hubs operated by the ministry.
The collaboration will leverage several groundbreaking AI models: AlphaEvolve, a Gemini-powered coding agent for algorithm optimization; AlphaGenome for analyzing DNA mutations; the proven AlphaFold for protein predictions; and a multi-agent AI co-scientist as a virtual research partner. AlphaFold is already being used by over 85,000 researchers in Korea.
The initiative supports the recently introduced K-Moonshot Missions by MSIT, a program to dramatically increase research productivity and address major national challenges.
