The Bottom Line: Dropbox opens its own data centers in Frankfurt and Paris to enable EU customers data residency within the European Union and meet regulatory requirements.

Dropbox will operate its own data centers in Frankfurt and Paris to enable European customers data storage within the EU. The move addresses growing regulatory requirements for data residency and data sovereignty.

Cloud service Dropbox has announced an expansion of its European infrastructure with locations in Frankfurt and Paris. While the company has served European customers through cloud-based infrastructure in the region so far, Dropbox is now relying on self-managed data centers within the European Union. This gives Dropbox greater control over data management and storage without any changes to users’ daily operations.

For Chief Business Officer Eric Webster, this expansion reflects the growing importance of data location for European businesses. Sales partners confirm that customers are increasingly asking for solutions that guarantee data storage within the EU. This is particularly a driver in Germany: Malte Stolze from wirverbindenwelten GmbH describes data sovereignty, transparency and regulatory compliance as decisive criteria when selecting cloud services. Jimmy Lesage from Abis Informatique confirms that many customers now regard EU data storage as a fundamental prerequisite for meeting regulatory requirements.

The transition will occur without interruption for existing customers. Existing subscriptions, login credentials and workflows remain unchanged, with no downtime anticipated. Dropbox will continue to operate its global platform and will additionally be supported by local teams on site.

The expanded EU data storage offering is already available to eligible Dropbox customers. Users of paid team subscriptions can request activation through support. At the same time, the own infrastructure creates the foundation for future services and features tailored specifically to European requirements, as well as for the deployment of artificial intelligence.
